Question about the Marine Corps mail out (US ONLY!)?

I got one of those things from the Marines today in the mail where you can return an information card to get something free and an "About the Corps" opportunity book. I would like to get something for free, but I noticed at the bottom it said this:

"Privacy Act Statement: The information you provide will be used for recruiting purposes only."

What does that mean? I really don't have plans on joining the military as of now, because I don't believe it is meant for me. I don't want to be recruited just because I signed up to get a free duffle bag, but I don't think that is what it means. A good explanation of how that all works would be great.

The Privacy Act of 1974 prohibits governmental agencies from 'sharing' your personal information for any purposes other than those stated on the form. So the Marines could not send your address over to the IRS (who has it anyway). Those rules don't apply to private industry.

If you fill out the card with your address, etc. you will get whatever 'free' thing is being offered...and you will start getting calls from recruiters. It is kind of like inviting the telemarketers to call you.

I've seen several duffle bags (usually belonging to members of the USN) that have what appears to be white paint all over the bottom end and up about 6-8 inches from the bottom all the way around. What is that? Is it some sort of waterproofing? We (in the Army) don't do that, so I'm not sure what the purpose is...our duffle bags get thrown around and stuck in all sorts of orientations (laying down, etc.) so it wouldn't help unless you coated the whole thing in that stuff.

Is it paint? It looks like white house paint.

What you're saying makes sense too though. I guess I just figured my unit would palletize all of our duffles and shrink-wrap it to keep it all together. Makes sense to mark it per platoon.

We painted our A and C bags different colors when we deployed. My platoon's bags were red with white lettering and other platoons had different combos. That helped us locate our bags when we got to Kuwait.
